  • "Sown" by Rich Bowman, Oil on canvas 50" x 50", 2016

"Sown" by Rich Bowman, Oil on canvas 50" x 50", 2016

Harvest Moons are associated with September and the sign of harvest time in the Midwest. It is also the time of Cultivate KC's Dig In event. This painting honors both the harvest and the reaping, what's been sown and will be sown. Much like a farmer, an artist plants seeds of ideas in every piece they create. Sometime those seeds take many growing seasons to germinate. The idea for this piece was planted a few years back to represent and convey my love of a full moon rising above freshly sown, golden fields where the summer's heat is still felt in the ground but the air is beginning to clear of humidity. It only seemed fitting to donate and pass on this experience to help future urban farmers. I'm two generations removed from my family's rich, German farming heritage but not from its love of the earth from which we draw life and a living.
