Earth Day 2023

What a great Earth Day Day of Service and Happy Hour we had on Friday, April 21st!

Farmers Paul and Emily send out a huge THANK YOU to everyone for showing up and working so hard. Our Earth Day event helps us get ready for the season at Westport Commons Farm, where we host educational tours and corporate volunteer events, sell food weekly through Kansas City Food Hub and our on-site farmstand, and donate produce to partners in our community.

Here’s a short list of things we were able to accomplish at the farm on Friday thanks to you:

  • Dug post holes and poured concrete for the shade structure over our community meeting area (aka picnic tables)
  • Cleared dead brush in our native plant management area to make way for new growth 😊
  • Planted perennial native plants- between Plexpod and Hyde Park, Farmer Dan Krull says over 140 trees and shrubs were planted!
  • Removed weeds and cover crops to make room for spring crops to grow (i.e. beets, radishes, onions)
  • Extended and beautified the mulched paths all over the farm
  • Cleaned up the compost pile so it can be more easily used this season
  • Filled an entire dumpster with brush for composting at Missouri Organic
  • Cleaned up trash from the swales and all around the farm
  • Sent a handful of volunteers to help out at Young Family Farm and the Habitat Restoration Area in Hyde Park

We had folks from Henderson Engineers, Accenture, The North Face, Ligand Pharmaceuticals, Terracon, UMKC, Cargill, Harvesters, Merrill Lynch, and Bank of America, as well as plenty of hardworking individuals. We appreciate your time and your support of the work at Cultivate KC.

MANY THANKS to Torn Label Brewing for providing beer for the happy hour and Tamaleon KC for bringing their incredible food truck yet again. Thanks, 2 Birds Farm, for the gorgeous transplants to sell too!
