Growing Growers & Cultivate KC: Farm Business Planning w/ Katherine Kelly

Saturday, July 14, 2018 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
Location: 300 E 39th St, Kansas City, MO 64110
Description: Join us for an interactive session, led by the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Cultivate Kansas City, and get ready to draft your farm business plan. If you have a laptop computer and can bring it along, please do! This will be a working workshop!

"Actually sitting down and coming up with a multi-year plan for your farm business is, for most farmers, a significant challenge! Most of us are doers, we want to roll up our sleeves and dig into the work itself; the thought of sitting in front of the computer and working on budgets, or a staffing plan, or an assessment of our resources, seems unpleasant and like a lower priority than getting the walk-in cooler installed! Does that mean we shouldn’t do it? Is farm-business planning a waste of time? No! For one, it can be fun, believe it or not! And two, it really does help improve the financial sustainability of your farm; research shows that it can double your chances of business success."

Workshop Agenda:

• 10:00 am: Check in, coffee and introductions
• 10:10-11:00 am: Overview of workshop activities and goals; launch into “What do you want your farm to look like in 5 years?”
• 11:00-12:00 pm: Breaking it down- “What is the stuff/ who are the people you need to make that happen? What will that cost? Timeline?”
• 12:00-12:45 pm: Lunch (provided) and “What are you good at? What are you not so good at?” discussions, along with “What do I do about that?”
• 12:45-1:45 pm: “Who is buying your products? How, when and where? Why do they want your product as opposed to someone else’s?”
• 1:45-2:45 pm: Building a budget- using a template, we’ll sketch out budgets for your individual farming operation. (If you already have a budget, please bring it!)
