Join Cultivate KC and New Roots for Refugees for a No-Till Farm Tour at URBAVORE Urban Farm. URBAVORE is a biologically diverse farmstead set on 13.5 acres in Kansas City’s urban core. Their energy-independent systems for food production, waste, water, and shelter redefine sustainability to build community and ecology.
The tour will focus on their bio-intense farming system which was founded upon a deep-mulch no-till approach coupled with chicken-power. With the absence of tillage, soil life is activated as worms, bacteria, and fungi work in harmony to produce the ideal conditions for plant roots. Today their no-till system has evolved to include permanent raised beds, heavy compost applications, intensive cover cropping, and the integration of hogs as well as silage tarps to terminate cover crops without tillage.
The event will also include a rain simulator demonstration by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to show the impact of different soil management practices on soil health and water management capacity.
This tour is supported by SARE.
