Healthy Soil Field Day

Posted on April 9, 2024 by Alicia Alferman

On Friday, March 29th, we braved some fierce winds and held our first Healthy Soil Field Day at Juniper Gardens Training Farm.

We worked with Missouri Organic Recycling to reactivate our large compost pile at the farm. After some preliminary reshaping earlier in the week, a group of volunteers spent the first portion of the event clearing plastic that had found its way into the pile. The truck arrived to add 5000 gallons of Boulevard Brewing Company beer dregs as staff and volunteers added wood chips to contain the dregs. Food waste from KC Can Compost will be added this week as well as more dry organic material like leaves.

The event also featured an engaging rainwater retention and soil health demonstration from Kansas NRCS staff, an opportunity to learn about interpreting soil tests with Anthony Reardon from K-State Research & Extension, and hands-on learning opportunities with the team from Missouri Organic Recycling and Dan Krull of Good Oak.

There were lots of new faces, great conversations and connections made, tours of the farm, beer from Torn Label Brewing – plus we all enjoyed music by The Stinging Nettles!
