KC Farmers’ Market July Pricing

Posted on July 29, 2024 by Alicia Alferman

Cultivate KC, in partnership with Kansas State University Research and Extension, commenced an eight week summer price collection project in early June at Farmer’s Markets across the Kansas City Metro Area. Through K-State’s Local Food Fellows Program, Cultivate KC hosted Sophia Ong, a local food fellow and student at K-State, to complete this project. This post is a follow up to our post earlier this month, in which June Prices across Kansas City Farmers’ Markets were reported. Below, concludes this summer price project, with a report for July Prices.

Throughout June and July, Sophia visited 19 farmers’ markets in the KC area and connected with vendors, explaining the project to them and collecting data on the prices of their produce, meat, and eggs in that week. In this project, the goal was to gather a wide range of markets across the Kansas City metro area to provide a well-rounded report on prices of produce, meat, eggs, and honey. These reports can be used as a resource among the farming community for pricing the goods they sell.

Sophia Ong, who took the lead on this project, enjoyed her time with Cultivate KC and found it a valuable experience for both herself and hopefully for the Kansas City farming community. She got to connect with so many farmers during her visits, and especially enjoyed hearing backstories from farmers and their farm, and the vendors she would see multiple times in a week, often greeted with the “there she is again!” comments. More on Sophia’s experience with this project, and her own analysis of the reports can be found HERE.
