2024 Annual Farmers & Friends Meeting
This morning, Cultivate KC hosted our annual Thanksgiving box distribution, with a guest appearance by… Dottie!
Utilizing the remaining funds from our Senior Market Match program, we distributed 150 produce boxes to two senior centers in the Kansas City metro. Distribution this year took place at Don Bosco Senior Center in Kansas City, MO, and Glanville Towers senior living complex, with help from Oak Street Health Strawberry Hill and KCK Housing Authority, in Kansas City, KS. Our newest Food Access program, the Dotte Mobile Grocer, also made her debut delivering boxes!
Our Senior Market Match program has had one of its most successful years to date, partnering with 11 farmers markets across the metro to implement the program. So far, seniors over the age of 60 have redeemed $11,691 for fresh local produce. The Menorah Heritage Foundation and Village Presbyterian Church generously fund the Senior Market Match program each year and we cannot wait to see its continued growth in 2024!
The remaining funds were used to purchase produce from our partners at the KC Food Hub. This year’s purchases included garlic, onions, sweet potatoes, delicata squash, kale, potatoes, collard greens, sweet peppers, swiss chard, and apples from Red Ridge Farms Flavor Market, JET Produce and Meats, Mellowfields Farm, Moon on the Meadow Farm, and South Baldwin Farms. Additionally, McLains Bakery, Tippins Pies, and Cosentino’s Market donated dinner rolls, pies, and portions of rotisserie turkeys. Simple recipes and instructions on how to freeze leftovers were also included in all boxes.
A big thank you again to all our partners who made this such a successful distribution!
