NRCS Conservation Programs Help KC Farmers Gain Climate Resilience
Our Food Access team was pleased to celebrate Thanksgiving with donations of produce boxes to the Don Bosco Senior Center!
Year round, Cultivate KC runs Senior Market Match in conjunction with the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP). SFMNP is a federally funded nutrition incentive program that provides checks to eligible seniors over 60 for redemption at participating farmers markets. With generous funding from Village Presbyterian Church and the Menorah Heritage Foundation, Cultivate KC is able to offer a match to those checks.
With remaining funds from that program, we assembled the Thanksgiving produce boxes. Produce was ordered through KC Food Hub and included 4 variety of apples (South Balwin Farms), multiple winter greens (Westport Commons Farm & Green Gate Family Farm), mashed potato and acorn squashes (Jet Produce & Meats), daikon radishes (Jet Produce & Meats), sweet potatoes (Flavor Market) or white potatoes (Pearl Family Farm), and green peppers (Jet Produce & Meats), as well as herb packets from Ophelia’s Blue Vine Farm. Also included in the box were a few recipes and tips on how to freeze any leftover produce.
With the help of staff and volunteers, 75 boxes were assembled and delivered the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, and the staff at Don Bosco shared that the seniors were thankful and excited to try new produce!
