WCF Looks Forward with New Site Manager Emily Kovar

Posted on February 6, 2024 by Alicia Alferman

Cultivate KC is welcoming an enthusiastic new member to our team, Emily Kovar! Emily is the new Site Manager for Westport Commons Farm. Even during this transitional period for the farm, she’ll be working closely with Mark Gawron, Westport Commons Farm Program Manager, to continue the valuable services Cultivate KC provides through this program. Soon she’ll plan for each growing season, maintain the farm, and harvest produce at a new site, but in the meantime, she’ll be growing in the raised beds at the Plexpod building, as well as getting creative about fun, new volunteer and public education opportunities. She’ll be the friendly face welcoming community volunteers, leading them in demonstrations and learning sessions.

Emily is a Kansas City native who developed her passion for local, healthy food systems upon starting her career in the food service industry. After working in pastry, she began observing some of the common issues that arise within our food system and changed career paths for a future in sustainable agriculture.

Emily recently graduated from Kansas State University, with a bachelor’s degree in both agronomy: soil science AND environmental science. While in school, she participated in many programs that centered around groundwater health and food security, so you can imagine her excitement to be a part of Cultivate KC and the work we are doing in the metro area. She also worked on a small-scale organic veggie farm in Manhattan where she discovered her love for growing vegetables and the fulfillment that comes from working in tandem with nature and the changing seasons.

While we actively work on securing a suitable new farm site, Emily is looking forward to fostering deeper connections between the food service world that she came from and the farming world that she is so thrilled to be a part of!
